Denmark leads in organic food consumption

Denmark’s position as a leading destination within green and sustainable solutions is underscored by a newly published report conducted by international organic association IFOAM revealing that Denmark is once again the world’s leading nation in organic food consumption.

In 2013, worldwide organic food consumption amounted to 72 billion dollars – a 12 per cent increase from 2012. In Denmark alone, 1, 2 billion dollars was spent on organic food in 2013.

Denmark – and Copenhagen in particular – is famous for its New Nordic cuisine and for using local and seasonal organic produce. Denmark set a record in organic food sales in 2014, where 7,6% of all food products were organic. Read more about the IFOAM report here. Organic food export rose by 31%, setting a record for the eight year in a row. 

- Consumers across the globe increasingly demand organic food, produced without jeopardizing the environment, nature and animal welfare. […] Danish organic produce […] is associated with credibility, innovation and professionalism abroad,” says Helene Birk, export manager in the Danish association for organic produce.
